The Pause: Epictetus and the Freedom Not to Accept Insults

Epictetus taught that an insult only becomes real when we accept it. This reflection explores the small, sovereign pause between a careless word and our response — the moment in which our dignity is protected. A breath between harm and meaning. A moment untouched by noise. False words scatter like dust. The self remains unbroken. "He surely does not know all my other faults." — Epictetus There is an interval, so brief it has no name in any language I know, between the blow of a word and the moment we decide what that word means.
