The Lantern Keeper of Wrocław — A Stoic Parable About Quiet Strength

A story about light, kindness, and the quiet courage found on the bridges of my hometown. Have you ever heard of Wrocław? One of the most beautiful cities in Europe — though I admit, I’m biased. I was born here. I grew up on these streets. And I love this city to bits. Wrocław at sunrise — the city waking slowly, full of quiet promise. Wrocław is full of life now — cafés humming, trams ringing, students spilling into the Rynek like bright threads in a tapestry. But I remember the 1980s, walking to my Saturday music school in the cold winter mornings, when the streets were almost empty. Just me, my violin case, and the sound of my boots on the frozen pavement. Such a difference now. My town is blooming. __ Wrocław — Facts Box Country: Poland Region: Lower Silesian Voivodeship Founded: 10th century (Early Middle Ages) Historical Names: Vratislavia , Breslau River: Odra (Oder) Population: approx. 672,000 (2025) Status: Regional capital of Lower Silesia Religion & Early Histo...

Rising Above the Noise: Saying No to Provocation

Rising Above the Noise: A Stoic Reflection

Stoic wisdom, family conflict, rising above provocation, clarity and calm, Epictetus quote, morning meditation, affirmations, serenity, mindfulness, philosophy of life

Yesterday was Sunday—a day of family, warmth, and gathering. Yet even in the comfort of familiar faces, sharp words can appear. Someone said something to me—quick, cutting, and designed to provoke. For a moment, I felt the fire rise. I was so close to replying in the same way, to starting a war of words that would have left scars on the day.

But then I remembered Epictetus: “It is not events that disturb people, but their judgments about them.”
I paused. I zoomed out. I saw the whole picture. Their words were not truth, only noise. Their frustration belonged to them, not to me. And in that pause, I chose clarity over chaos.

The small stayed small. The pattern became visible. I walked steadily in clarity.

This is the gift of Stoic wisdom: the reminder that serenity is not found in controlling others but in guiding our own judgments. Each time I repeat within myself:
🌿 I rise above distractions.
👁️ I see the whole, not the fragment.
🚶 I walk steady in clarity.

…I feel lighter. Stronger. Free.

So today I feel like a winner. Quiet and calm. Thanks to the Stoics, I walk steady in clarity.

By the way, after the incident I took a nap. For the first time, I had a dream about my Mum, who passed away in May. I didn’t see her, but I listened to her beautiful voice. She took me on a journey into paradise. She told me that in Heaven, where she lives now, there are flowers and trees which sing. I wish it would be the truth.
All the best to my readers. We will all meet again somehow, in our Heavens.
